Timing systems
Vedic Astrology Dasha: A Beginner's Guide
A Dasha is a traditional planetary-period system used in Jyotish to organize timing interpretations. Vimshottari Dasha is one of the systems commonly encountered.
The Vimshottari sequence
Vimshottari describes a 120-year cycle through periods ruled by Ketu, Venus, the Sun, the Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, and Mercury. The traditional duration differs for each ruler. A person's starting period and remaining balance are calculated from the Moon's Nakshatra at birth.
A major period is called a Mahadasha and can be divided into shorter sub-periods, often called Antardashas. Exact date calculations depend on chart data and the chosen calculation convention.
How periods are interpreted
Practitioners interpret a period in relation to the planet's sign, house, rulership, and other chart factors. A Dasha period by itself does not establish that a particular event will occur. Birth-time uncertainty can also affect chart details used in a reading.
Dasha is an astrological timing framework, not a scientifically established forecasting method. Treat its interpretations as traditional possibilities, not certainty or a substitute for professional planning.
