A Beginner's Guide to Nakshatras

Nakshatras are 27 divisions along the ecliptic used in Jyotish to add detail to interpretations of the Moon and other chart placements.

The 27 Nakshatras

Each Nakshatra covers 13 degrees and 20 minutes of the sidereal zodiac. The Moon's position at birth is commonly used to identify a person's Janma Nakshatra. Traditional Jyotish descriptions associate each lunar mansion with a symbol, ruling planet, and set of interpretive themes.

Nakshatras are used in several kinds of chart reading, including discussions of temperament, compatibility, and timing. They are interpreted with the wider chart rather than as a fixed label that determines a person's character or future.

What are padas?

Each Nakshatra is divided into four quarters called padas. A pada gives a more specific location within the lunar mansion and is considered alongside the Moon's sign and the other placements. Since the Moon travels through the zodiac every month, accurate birth time and time-zone conversion can be important near a boundary.

Traditional meaning, not certainty

Nakshatra meanings come from a traditional astrological system. They are not scientifically validated personality measures or guarantees of events. Treat an interpretation as one cultural lens, and seek qualified professional help for health, legal, financial, or other consequential matters.
