What Is Rashi in Vedic Astrology?

Rashi is a Sanskrit word for a zodiac sign. In a Vedic birth-chart conversation, it often refers specifically to Chandra Rashi: the sign occupied by the Moon at birth.

Chandra Rashi and the Moon sign

Jyotish practitioners use the Moon's position as an important reference in a Janma Kundali. The Moon moves through the zodiac relatively quickly, so the birth date, exact time, place, and historical time zone are used to calculate its sign. A difference in birth time can matter when the Moon is close to a sign boundary.

The Moon sign is one part of a larger chart. Traditional readings may consider it alongside the ascendant, planetary placements, houses, Nakshatra, and Dasha periods rather than treating one sign as a complete description of a person.

Rashi is not the same as a Sun sign

Many familiar horoscope columns use a person's Sun sign. Vedic astrology commonly gives particular attention to the Moon sign and uses a sidereal zodiac, while much Western astrology uses a tropical zodiac. These are different reference systems, so the signs may not match. When someone asks for their Rashi in a Jyotish context, they usually mean their Vedic Moon sign.

How to use a Rashi interpretation

A Rashi interpretation describes traditional symbolism, not a scientifically established personality test or a guaranteed prediction. Different astrologers may interpret the same chart differently. Use it as cultural or personal reflection, and do not substitute it for qualified medical, legal, financial, or other professional guidance.
